After an attack at Rikers Island, New York City's “most notoriously negligent landlord” was momentarily hospitalized.
Daniel Ohebshalom surrendered to authorities on Thursday after reportedly failing to make hundreds of court-ordered repairs to his Manhattan residences. Rikers is where he might serve 60 days.
One source close to Ohebshalom stated the landlord may have fractured facial bones Friday afternoon after being struck by another inmate. A Department of Correction official stated the attack happened at the Eric M. Taylor Center intake area around 12:15 p.m. Ohebshalom returned to Rikers late Friday with non-life-threatening injuries.
Sources don't think Ohebshalom was targeted because the assailant threatened other detainees. In an extraordinary action last week, the city issued an arrest warrant for Ohebshalom after years of trying to fine a Washington Heights landlord and making emergency repairs.
The city charges that Daniel Ohebshalom and Belmont Ventures LLC have committed 700 major health and safety violations in the two West 170th Street properties. In response, HPD Commissioner Adolfo Carrion Jr. issued a warrant.
We found him. “He faces $3 million in fines and penalties and 60 days in jail,” said Carrion. Sonia Peralta and her neighbors have complained about their apartments for years. “We have rats, roaches, no heat or hot water,” she claimed. So delighted to have a little celebration. About time.”
Another tenant stated they went two weeks or a month without hot water “always during the worst times.” The city has fined buildings for conditions before, including seven figures in 2022. The HPD spent approximately $50,000 on emergency repairs in January 2023. Ohebshalom owns many Manhattan homes that frequently rank among the city's worst landlords.
People face mold, leaks, vermin, rodents, roaches, peeling paint, and lead paint. Their kids and seniors are exposed. This farce must end, Carrion stated.
