Police say a 1-year-old girl was killed by an Uber SUV after being dropped off with family in a northern Houston suburb.
Harris County Sheriff's Office: The girl was caught under a rear tire, and while the driver tried to move the SUV to extricate her, apartment complex witnesses assaulted him.
Muhammad Khan, the driver, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Sheriff's statement: "Mr. Khan stopped the car, but the child was under the left rear tire. All parties assaulted and pulled Mr. Khan from the vehicle, preventing him from moving it."
Uber called the Sunday afternoon event a “heartbreaking tragedy” and suspended the driver pending an investigation.
"As the 2-year-old juvenile walked in front of the vehicle she was not visible to Mr. Khan," the sheriff confirmed. "At this time Mr. Khan began to slowly drive forward and struck the juvenile with the vehicle's front left [corner]." The Volkswagen Atlas' high hood and boxy front may have covered the girl.
Paramedics were called when family members took the almost-2-year-old toddler to a petrol station, the sheriff's office reported.
It said first responders treated her there and took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead an hour later. The girl played outside every other day, according to security video from neighbor Simya Washington. She told KPRC she heard noise and saw the wreckage Sunday.
"I was just thinking about my baby, my son," stated. "I couldn’t even do it." The assault is being investigation by the sheriff's Vehicular Crimes Division.
