Idaho convict escapes hospital following planned breakout, 2 officers shot in 'brazen' assault. (PART-2)

Meade was sentenced to 20 years in jail in 2017 for firing numerous shots at police during a high-speed chase while escaping a traffic stop. He admitted to aggravated assault, methamphetamine possession, felonious firearm possession, and jail shank possession.

Meade committed “injurious behavior” Tuesday night in a maximum-security institution, according to Corrections Department head Josh Tewalt. Medical workers at the department decided he needed hospital treatment, and he arrived before 10 p.m. local time.

“As the chief adequately and appropriately described, this is what we believe to be a planned attack,” Tewalt added. In case it wasn't isolated, we took every precaution.... The entire south Boise facility was put on lockdown.”

A Corrections Department inquiry is also underway to determine how the incident occurred and Meade's location. Tewalt was unaware if Saint Alphonsus often transferred offenders, although it could depend on hospital emergency department capacity.

Tewalt said Meade was in administrative segregation, the highest Corrections Department confinement level.

"That's not a determination by your criminal history," he said. "It's a classification that's earned by your behavior in custody."

Police advised against approaching Meade and Umphenour, who are armed and dangerous. Call 911.

Umphenour is wanted on two counts of aggravated violence against law enforcement and one of aiding and abetting an escape.
