Damsel: A Review of the Delectably Dark Fantasy Film

During the course of the story, a young princess finds herself involved in a plot that involves her mother-in-law and a beast that is rampaging around.

Having been abandoned for dead, she must muster all of her wits, make it through the agony that she has been forced to endure, and make an effort to turn the tables on her adversaries.

A courageous young woman named Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown) is about to marry a dashing prince—but not before she faces a dragon with deadly breath. To celebrate International Women's Month, Netflix released this dark fantasy about a strong woman who can defend her people and herself.

That's essentially the story summary. A young man is sent as a human sacrifice and ends up on the dinner plate of a monster in the classical Greek tale of Theseus and the Minotaur, which seems to have served as an inspiration for the plot of Damsel.

But there's enough creativity in this story to make it stand out, with elements like a surprising narrative, fantastical locations, and distinct characters.

Millie Bobby Brown plays noblewoman Eoldie, whose estate is poor. As requested by her father (Ray Winstone), she marries the prince of a prosperous realm. Her fiance, Henry of Aurea (Nick Robinson), is charming. However, his mother, Queen Isabelle (Robin Wright), seems suspicious.

Elodie's stepmother Lady Bayford (Angela Bassett) is uneasy about the royal matriarch and unsuccessfully attempts to break up the marriage. The new princess is persuaded onto a mountaintop ritual after exchanging vows and bands, where she gets a nasty surprise.

Elodie finds magical support and hope in this inhospitable interior after barely surviving dragon fire. Vendetta revelations spark violent confrontations.

Brown, known for ‘Stranger Things’, proves she can star in a film. She became a warrior princess from a psychic girl. Wright plays the cunning Queen well. In contrast, 28 Weeks Later filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is adept at making dark spooky films. Other highlights include Larry Fong's stunning cinematography, stunning CGI, and precise editing.
